Tab and Indent

Julie

Hi - this is strange.

I am on Word 2002. Using the Normal style, I press Tab on
a new line, type "Re:", press tab again and then type my
text. My text goes to the next line, so I hit Ctrl+T
twice so it wraps around under the description on the
first line.

Unless I set tabs manually (of course there are actually
tabs there by default - every 1/2"). So I go up to the
ruler and click to create tabs and it works fine.
Otherwise the hanging indent doesn't work, and the Ctrl+T
causes the first line indent to move. This did not happen
in 2000.

It there a setting or something that I'm not aware of?

Thanks for your time.

If you indent the reference line (Ctrl+M), then add a hanging indent
(Ctrl+T), you should get the desired effect (without setting any tab stops)
provided you have "Don't add automatic tab stop for hanging indent" checked
on the the Compatibility tab of Tools | Options (even though you may not see
a tab stop at the hanging indent marker, the indent functions as a tab
stop). This is the correct way to approach this type of formatting. You may
find that you prefer to have the hanging indent at, say, 7/8" instead of 1"
(assuming the reference line is indented to 0.5"), in which case you can
drag the hanging indent marker; there will still be an "understood" tab stop
at that location.

Thanks! I think my problem is the fact that I have a
large text box on the left side of the page, in a header.
If I get rid of that, there is no more problem.
