Tab character

With the Show/hide button clicked we see a small right pointing arrow
indicating the tab key has been clicked

(I ought not to be writing this here since I am writing on this occasion on
behalf of a friend I try to help - he has recently acquired a PC with Win
2000 and Word 2000 but the number of Word Newsgroups is so vast I do not
know where to post a PC question - I use both Mac and PC)

The problem is that, whatever I do, any new document shows the tab marks,
whichever way the Show/hide button is toggled! (He has not got a printer yet
and I have not brought a doc home to see it it is a printing or non-printing
character as displayed)

The real problem is that I have tried to find Normal to throw away - I have
even changed the default font and then Searched for all files changed in the
day - Normal does not appear anywhere - nor can I find anything recently
changed which is a likely candidate

Any suggestions other than reinstalling Word and even Win - heaven forbid!

Thanks?

The settings are in Preferences--whoops, you want for a PC? It should be
Tools | Options, View tab--there are lots of options under NonPrinting
Characters. The Show/Hide button really just checks and unchecks the All
button--if any of the others are checked they will stay on regardless of the
button.

Aside from the Word | Preferences vs. Tools | Options difference, this is
the same cross-platform.

In Word on the PC, go to Tools>Options & on the View page remove the checks
in the boxes for Nonprinting Characters.
