Tab in numbering does not move to next"level" in the list hierarchy

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel This is how things used to go:

I start my list by typing "1." and hitting the space bar. When I hit return, the next line begins with "2." However, it used to be that when I pressed the tab key, the "2." went to the next level: "a." (followed by "i." if I hit tab again to get to the third level).

Yesterday this stopped working. When I hit tab after my "2." it simply tabs over and leaves the "2." where it was. So, basically, I can't use tab to get to the next level in the list hierarchy. I haven't changed any of the settings, and can't seem to find the answer anywhere online.

Suggestions?

Well, maybe a computer gremlin changed it for you :)

Check in Word> Preferences> AutoCorrect - AutoFormat As You Type, make sure
the box is checked for "Tabs & backspace set left indent" & that the checks
are in place for "Automatic bulleted lists" as well as "Automatic numbered
lists".

That did it!

So you know: I ALMOST tried that, but the description of that box is misleading. It says, "Tabs and backspace set left indent." I didn't want to set the left indent; I wanted to change the numbering level using tabs and backspace. Anyway, apparently I should have been a bit less literal and tried it out before writing it off.

Thanks for your help! I'll have to find the gremlin now...

That PARTICULARLY badly-named control does not set the numbering either :)

It ACTUALLY sets the "level number" on the paragraph.

Which MAY set the left indent. And it MAY set the numbering format.
Depending on how you have configured the list :)

It's a very badly-named control. It should have a "click here for help" on
it, but it doesn't.

Cheers
