Tab inserts tab instead of changing outline level

In outline numbered mode when I am at the start of a line and hit th
tab key I get a tab character inserted instead of moving to the nex
outline level.

The only support docs I can find are about having to hit shift-tab i
you WANT a tab character inserted. Moving to the next outline leve
seems like it's supposed to be the default but it's not working. I
used to work but I can't recall having changed any settings that woul
have caused it to stop working.

I'm using Word 2002. Any help much appreciated.

On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of the Tools > AutoCorrect
dialog box, make sure that "Set
first and left indent with tabs and backspaces" is selected.
