Tab Problems Word

Hi Guys

Having this weird Word Tab Problem.
The problem is intermittent and seems to be appearing in Word on PCs
with Windows XP and Office 2000

We have tried the following:

- updating office to latest Service pack as well as Windows
- reformatted the PC and rebuilt it using an Image
- Recreated normal.dot
- Updating the Graphics Driver

We have done Basically everything imaginable but the problem still
persists.

When we close Word and re-open it on the faulty machines Word usually
restarts satisfactorily anyway - the tab and indent markers return and
appear to work normally until they become 'invisible' again. When the
fault occurs, tabbing and indents still appear to work normally - but
the button and markers markers just display incorrectly.

Can anyone help?
Thanks

You don't say when and what may prompt this 'fault' and the link to the
screenshot doesn't work (for me). I can guess at a possible cause of the
problem.

When you open a new document Word uses a template normal.dot which sets out
the basic in-house style. However, when documents created with a previous
configuration of normal.dot are (usually) opened in the style current at the
time. To check this you could open a new document and a document known to
be created some while ago and check the differences. It would also be
helpful to has 'show/hide' turned on. I find this useful to have turned on
permanently as it shows non-printables such as tabs and spaces so that it is
easy to see why documents may look 'out of balance' but I know this annoys
some users.

It is possible to change normal.dot. However, it would be necessary to
update all extant documents so that this problem does not re-occur. For
this reason it would useful to completely check your 'office standard' style
of documents before changing normal.dot.

I had a look at the screenshot - are you saying that the paragraph and
tab marks in the document are not displaying? At what point do they
become invisible again? is it while you are editing a document? If you
are on a network, your users will use a profile when they log on. This
profile will save any changes made to application options such as
show/hide being switched on and off. This is an application setting,
not a document setting, so once you switch it on in Word it stays on
for all docs until you switch it off. The setting should save with
your profile, so the next time you open Word, it remembers and
show/hide will be switched on or off depending on what it was set to
when you last logged off.

If you are not on a network but simply open documents on different PC's
then the PC will use the profile directly from the hard drive. If you
had show/hide switched on, on one machine, then open the document on
another machine which uses a different profile, the show/hide may have
been switched off on this one and the marks will not display.

If the show/hide is switching itself off during editing - then I cannot
imagine what would do this. Hope the above makes sense.
