Tab space after heading numbers

I have an older template that utilizes the nine built-in heading styles.
After the number for each heading style there is a tab space. This tab space
appears to be about 0.2", but is consistant for ALL headings (the space
itself is 0.2", the tab space is not set at 0.2"). I am not sure how to make
the tab space the same size after each heading. The actual settings under
outline numbering for these styles are Number position left, aligned at 0",
and text position tab space after at 0" and indent at 0". There are no set
tab spaces for the style and the paragraph settings do not include
indentation.

When I recreate styles similar to these in a new template, the tab spacing
after the heading numbers is not consistant. I set all tab settings to zero
under outline numbering, have no tab spaces set, and don't add any
indentation under the paragraph settings.

This is how the old template looks:

1 Text
1.1 Text
1.1.1 Text
1.1.1.1 Text
1.1.1.1.1 Text
(space between number and text is consistant for ALL headings)

This is how the new template looks:

1 Text
1.1 Text
1.1.1 Text
1.1.1.1 Text
1.1.1.1.1 Text
(space between number and text varies)

How do I get the tab space to be the same length for all headings like it is
in the first example? Thanks.

Greetings--
Have you tried using a space character instead of a tab character to
separate list numbers from list text?

Robert,

I have tried using a space character instead of a tab character, but it has
a negative impact on the TOC generation and formatting. : (

Any other ideas?

Robert,

Yes, my heading styles were set up per Shauna's site. The headings that I
built are set to zero for all tab settings and they end up picking up the
default tab stops for the document. However, the styles from an older
template have the exact same settings (zero tabs) and the result is a tab of
even size for each heading instead of the tab stop moving to the default for
the document. I cannot duplicate this.

Are you able to set up a new, non-built-in outline numbering list that gives
you the same result with tab spaces? I can only duplicate this effect using
the space character and not the tab. The tab is preferrable so that the TOC
generates and picks up the tab spaces from the headings.

Thanks

If you allow the same amount of space between the number position and the
tab position in each level, they should be uniform. I guess I don't
understand what your problem is.

Greetings--
I was able to reproduce your problem. It happens when you set values at 0
everywhere like you do. This seems to get Word confused.
However, I found a solution. Here are the exact steps:
1) Set up your list scheme as you already have done (indent, space after
and alignment all have their values set at 0 for all 9 levels).
2) OK out of the numbering dialog.
3) You should see a figure "1" + a full stop + a tab character in your
document window. Leave the caret where it is.
4) Click "Format | Paragraph | Tabulations".
5) In the Tabulation dialog, set the default tab stop at 0.1cm (I am using
centimetres, you might try your luck with inches).
In Word 2003, this scheme works as described in your first posting:
1 Text
1.1 Text
1.1.1 Text
1.1.1.1 Text
1.1.1.1.1 Text
Note that you have to press the Tab key whenever you have changed levels.
Otherwise, you will get the following scheme instead:
1. Text
2. Text
etc
Cheers
Robert
