Tabbing between cells

Kathy L

I am working with Excel 97 and I thought instead of
hitting the return key, I could "Tab" and be sent to the
next cell to the right. However, when I hit "tab" I get a
cell far away from where I started and it is not part of
the spreadsheet. How can I change this (if possible) or
is this only in the newer versions of Excel?

Thanks in Advance.
