table being weird

An author sent me a table to go into his chapter (both in .doc
format). I converted the chapter to .docx and have had no trouble --
but Insert > Object > Text from File has brought in a completely
normal, edited table -- but when it's narrower than the page
(AutoFit), the surrounding text appears on either side, as if it were
a Picture with a non-Inline with Text property!

Also, when I added a Caption (marked Above, as usual), it put the
Caption paragraph in the middle of the table, with a lot of space
above and below it, between two rows. Dragging the caption above the
table caused the paragraph above the table to exchange places with it,
and the way to get rid of that paragraph (which was a one-line dummy
that said "TABLE") turned out to be pressing Delete at the end of the
Caption paragraph in its new position above the table.

[The author is in Austria; perhaps he saved in .doc format out of
something else, such as OpenOffice, that hasn't perfectly mastered the
format -- previously, Word did not recognize what was labeled a .jpg
of the same table, while it had imported three real .jpgs with no
problem.]

Glad to help. I'm not sure why the caption misbehaved except that Word does
really odd things when trying to keep a wrapped object and its anchor on the
same page.
