Table cross referenced marked as changed when table contents change.

Not sure if this is a word installation/setup problem or a
bug. I've tried this on several documents with the same
results. Please reply if this has happened to you and/or
if you have an elegant solution.

I have a table with a caption in a document and cross
reference that caption several times in the document. I
have track changes on (tried this with highlight changes
in print only and both display and print) I make a change
to one or more cell contents in the table, without
changing the caption of the table or the number of rows
and/or columns in the table. When I do print preview
and/or print the document, all the cross references to the
table are highlighted as changes. If I only accept the
highlighted changes to the cross references and repeat the
print preview and/or print the document, the cross
references are still highlighted as changed. If I accept
all changes, including the changes in the table, The cross
references are not highlighted, but neither is the changes
in the table. The customer wants the changes highlighted
and the change bars visible in the printed copy sent to
him. My inelegant solution is to replace all the cross
references with "hard coded" text, but this is time
consuming and creates more work if I need to add a table
to the document. Thank you for any help you can offer.
