Table formatting while protecting a cell

Martin Conradi

I have a series of tables in a document, each with three cells. Is there any
way I can protect the initial formatting in one of these three cells so that
I can globally reformat everything else?

Many thanks.

This is easily accomplished using styles. Apply one style to the first cell,
another to the rest, then modify the styles as needed.

Many thanks. Where can I learn about styles and how to apply them? I have
always found them desperately confusing.

Suzanne,

I've tried your suggestion but it doesn't solve my problem.

I have 3 cells making up a table (this started as a 2 x 2 array with the
lower pair merged to form one wide cell at the bottom, with two smaller
cells on top. Top left is a picture; top right is technical information;
bottom are user notes. There may be 100 of these units in a document.

We want the user to be able to do a 'Control-A' and change all the user
notes in terms of point size, line spacing and so on - without the technical
info being altered.

Most users find Styles completely incomprehensible - as do I!

There may be another approach to this problem, but I think it will have to
start with styles. You can provide macros (accessible via toolbar button) to
modify the User Notes style, but you'll have to apply it first.
