Table of Content only shows Header 1

Hi, Using Office 2007. After a few hours of work I finally managed to have
header 2 with numbers before it (like 1.2, 1.3, ...). Now if I create a TOC
only Header 1 is shown. Header 2 and Header 3 are not shown anymore. Even
though I requested to go to level 3. If I then try to select the styles to
use for the different TOC levels the custom levels I created are not shown as
'available style'. (under 'insert TOC' --> options)

How do I get the custom Header styles that I generated in that 'available
styles' list?

Hi Tom;

I don't mean to be picky :) but you're referring to Head_ing_ Styles, not
Head_er_ Styles ‹ there's a big difference.

Secondly, you've somehow managed to post to the Word for Mac newsgroup
rather than the one for Windows versions. Ordinarily we would be able to
help on an issue like this, but I hesitate to pursue it due to the numbering
you describe. Exactly how you "managed" that could have a significant
bearing on the matter and further may be inherent to that particular version
of the program... Numbering is a tricky business.

I'd suggest you ask in one of the Word for Windows groups:

Hi Tom:

I "do" mean to be picky because I think it will answer your problem :)

The "Header" series of styles are designed for the running header of the
document: they lack the "level" property that makes numbering and TOCs "just
work".

The "Heading 1" through to "Heading 9" series of styles are built-in styles
that have the properties required to get TOCs and numbering working
automatically. It's all done for you, just customise the Heading series
styles to your requirements.

Technically, the issue is in the "Level" property of the paragraph section
of the style, and in the switches you have applied in the TOC field.

The simplest way to build a TOC is to specify "\o "1-3"" as the control
switch. That draws in all styles with a level setting of 1 through 3. The
Header styles have a Level of 0 (Body Text) and so are not included.

You could override this using the \t switch and specifying a style name and
level for each entry, but why do all that work? Other users will instantly
break such a document when they work on it, because they won't realise it's
a special.

Use the Heading styles and it will all "just work".

Cheers
