Table of Contents disappears

Using Word 2002 SP-1 under XP Professional.

Yet another blank page problem ... Editing a largish document (100
pages) with many Headings 1 and 2, and track changes turned on.

When updating the TOC, it asks me if I want to overwrite the existing
TOC. I say yes, and the TOC then disappears completely!

When repeating the above with track changes turned off, there is no
problem.

Ideas anyone?

[At this rate I will be going back to Word97. Word 2002 is becoming a
real time-wasting pain].

It doesn't sound as if you're "updating" the TOC, which you do by pressing
F9. When you do that, you get a message box asking if you want to update
just the page numbers or the whole TOC. You don't get a message asking about
overwriting the TOC unless you're inserting a new TOC from scratch, which
should not be necessary.
