Table of Contents formatting

L

Lizelle

Hi,
I want to format my table of contents to be laid out in a
specific way. I have applied word styles to my document.
The headings in the body text are in upper case. But in
my table of contents i would like to have these headings
in Upper and lower case. How would i be able to do this?

I also need to format my table of contents to have spaces
(1 line)inbetween certain sections of the table of
contents. How will I be able to do this?

Hi Lizelle

Type your headings in upper and lower case (as you want them in the TOC) but
use the heading style to format the *font* as all caps.

In the table of contents, you may be able to get what you want by using the
'Space before' setting on a TOC style. For instance, even if you wanted
extra space before every Heading 1 entry you could add the space to the TOC
1 style. If it is more complicated than that you may be able to 'cheat' by
using a special style for the headings that start a new table of contents
section, and mapping that to a different TOC style, or by breaking the table
of contents into several separate TOC fields for different bookmarked
sections of the document. However, this would only really be worthwhile for
a big document with a long life cycle, where the continued automatic update
was vital. Otherwise, you could simply add the space or formatting to the
table of contents when the headings are finalised, and after that lock the
TOC field or update page numbers only.

I'll reiterate what Margaret has said:

1. For the headings (and in general), don't ever type with CapsLock on. This
locks you into UPPERCASE, which is always direct formatting. TOC entries
always pick up direct formatting, but they don't pick up formatting applied
by the heading style. If you instead type the headings in caps and lowercase
as you want them to appear in the TOC and format the style as All Caps,
you'll get the caps you want in the heading itself and the C&lc you want in
the TOC.

2. You can modify the TOC styles any way you like. In fact, since they are
by default set to update automatically, you need only change the formatting
of a single entry at any level in order to modify the style. I do usually
add Space Before (and "Keep with next") to the TOC 1 style and often (when
it is a part or section heading) make it centered and without page numbers.
