Does anyone know the easiest way to create a TOC from
multiple word files?

Thanks

Hi Jay

Thanks for replying so quickly and pointing me in the
right direction. I was trying to use master/sub documents
and I thought there must be an easier way. I ended up
using the insert field function - and in the pop-up
window choosing category (TOC) and field (RD)(Word XP)
and it works!!! Very exciting ...

However - just wondering if there is a way for an entry
in the TOC to link to the file and page number it is
referring to - just like when you insert a TOC at the
beginning of a word document.

Cheers

Hi, Kate,

I don't know how the TOC field works internally, but it appears that it
won't hyperlink to files other than the one containing the field. At least,
I couldn't make it work with RD fields.

An alternative might be to use IncludeText fields instead of RD fields.
These bring the actual text of the linked files into the main document, so
the hyperlinks work. The penalty is a large, unwieldy document.

Hi Kate,

You either have to generate a TOC for each document and
manually put them together, or create a Master Document
and generate it once.

Most of my documents are very big and therefore Master
Document feature is out of the question for me, but it
might work for you. I generate a TOC at the end of each
document and manually copy them to another TOC document.
I convert the generated TOC to text only when I do this.

I hope this helps,
KC
