I've been using Scrivener a lot. I had an older version of Word which I rarely used but decided to upgrade after trying it again.

Is it possible to have a TOC as I do in Scrivener, in the navigation pane with folders, chapters etc. so that if I click on the left pane, I'm in the chapter I want.

Yes. In Word it is called the Document Map. Click View | Navigation
Pane, and then change the dropdown at the top of the pane from
Thumbnails to Document Map.

It works better if you use Word's built-in Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.
Just ask if any questions come up--like everything in Word, there's some
room for adjustment.

Out of curiosity--I've heard a lot of people rhapsodize about Scrivener,
but haven't tried it myself yet. What is bringing you back to Word?

Thanks, it worked. I haven't found an option for folders which can house one or more chapters, is that possible?

I love Scrivener. It's imperfect. I will likely continue to use both. I tried the older version of Word and I liked the interface which was difficult for me to admit. But, I googled the 2008 version and decided to give it a go. I may not like PCs but Word is an application I do like though it's imperfect too. Isn't everything?

No, I don't think so. The Doc Map only shows a single document, so
everything has to be in that one document. (there's no "binder" aspect
to it, but Word can handle very long documents) You could finesse the
equivalent--apply Heading 1 to what would be your Folder Name, and
Heading 2 to what would be the Chapter Names, and that will get you a
hierarchy and let you collapse individual "Folder Names"/Heading 1 levels.

You might also check out View | Outline, in which you can collapse it to
just show "Folder Names"/Heading 1 levels and then quickly drag and drop
a "Folder 8" to be the first "Folder". And do much more.

Indeed, everything is. Especially software. Thanks for the answer.

Thanks for your help and you're welcome. ;)

Well, I managed to do something. I was getting fed up because I couldn't get it to work but finally, I managed to get 8 chapters to appear in the navigation pane.

I'm trying to get the headings/chapter titles to appear directly on top of each other in the navigation pane, all indented the same amount. I used Heading 1 for each so that they're not collapsible as when I click Heading 2. It's odd that 3 of my 8 chapters are right on top of each other, equally indented but the other 4 are either indented more or too much.
