table of contents, list of figures/tables

in my word docs, i have generated an associated table of contents (toc),
list of figures (lof) and list of tables (lot). when i make changes to the
rest of the document that i know will affect the values stored in the toc,
lof, and/or lot, do i have highlight the toc/lof/lot and regenerate them or
will the page numbers automatically update?

thanx...as of now, when page values or heading types/names change, i will
regenerate the toc/lof/lot all the time

It's always a good idea to explicitly update these tables before saving and
closing the document, but if you have "Update fields" checked on the Print
tab of Tools | Options, then when you print you'll be prompted to update
them (you'll get a dialog asking if you want to update just the page numbers
or the entire table).
