Table of Contents Numbering issue

I had my table of contents set up in my document (using MS Word 2004 for Mac version 11.5). It was auto formatting etc nicely. Then I decided I needed to start the numbering from 1 on the title page onwards (it has auto formatted with roman numerals). Now I have redone the numbering but instead of the table of contents having nice heading 1's that go 1,2,3,4 Heading one acts like one big single chapter so I can format sections with Heading 1 but they dont retain a number and all the subheadings (Headings 2,3,4 etc.) all look like part of this one big chapter. In other words my table of contents used to have seven chapters now it looks like one with lots of little sub chapters. Help!

I was hoping someone else would catch this one....

Honestly, I don't really understand your question. I'm sure it's
fixable, if you haven't fixed it already, but can you try explaining
again? Page numbering shouldn't affect heading numbering. Can you
explain exactly what menus and settings you changed?

Hi Logan:

The short answer is: "You have applied a new list format to Heading 1.
Instead, you should have edited the EXISTING list that was already applied
to Heading 1."

The long answer is here:

Shauna offers a full description of how to set this up so it will work every
time.

Cheers
