Table of Contents page numbers don't update when opened from Outlo

Our company document template in Word 2003 inserts a Table of Contents { TOC
\o “1-3†\u } which works fine when the document is saved and re-opened from
the saved version using File, Open.

However, when the file is emailed in Outlook and then opened directly from
the message attachment, all the page numbers initially appear as “3†and only
update when the fields are updated (ie with F9). The Pages are referenced
using codes like { PAGEREF _TOC2208489xx \h }. Save the same file from the
email message and then re-open, and the problem does not arise.

Are you able to suggest a reason why this is happening or a solution to this
problem?

Turn off the option that allows Word to open documents in Reading Layout
view: On the Tools menu, click Options, click the General tab, and then
clear the "Allow starting in Reading Layout" check box.
