Table of Contents question

Is there a way to have the table of contents field code pick up the
formatting of Heading 1/2/3 at the level of a character.

I have a user that has generated a 3-level table of contents using 3 heading
styles but some of the text for these headings has the word "New" as a
prefix, and this word is formatted as deep-blue/bold font. The table of
contents just picks the font style of the heading itself, which is black/bold.

Is this a Ford Model T type issue, where you can have any color you want as
long as it's black (or whatever the heading style has selected)?

Thanks ahead of time.

The TOC field *does* pick up direct font formatting; it does not pick up
formatting that is defined as part of the paragraph style.

Thanks Susan for your reply. I thought the same thing, that the TOC
formatted itself based upon the formatting of the heading text.

I just tried this again, where the style is Heading 1, and I formatted the
first word only of the heading text for red. I pressed Ctrl + A to select
the document, pressed F9 to update fields and selected Update Entire Table.
My TOC is still entirely in black.

I then created a new document and inserted a couple of headings, formatted a
word or two in a different color and when I generated the TOC it still shows
up as black text.

Am I missing something perhaps?

What version of Word? I haven't tested in Word 2007, but in Word 2003 (and,
AFAIK, every previous version), the TOC does pick up direct font formatting.

The user is using 2003, as I am and I tried everything but recreating the
styles and all I can get is black text.

I appreciate your replies however and I'll keep plugging away and see if I
can get it to behave properly.

I don't do table of contents very often and most of my work is in Access &
Excel, but my experience with TOC's is just as you mentioned earlier. I
strongly recollect that formats were picked up as found.

If I find out what's up I'll post back with what I've found.

Thanks again for your reply, I don't often visit the Word forum but the
times that I've posted a question and received replies your name always seems
to be among the winners.

The only thing that occurs to me is that if the text is always at the
beginning of the heading, and the "Format beginning of list item like the
one before it" (in AutoFormat As You Type) is enabled, this might have
something to do with it. I'm not sure why that occurs to me, but I'm just
wondering if Word might suppress this formatting if it thinks it was
responsible for applying it. A long shot, I admit!

Well that arcane tidbit regarding the AutoFormat as You Type gave me some
hope, but alas, it too failed to capture the font color.

I played around a number of different options on the AutoFormat tab to no
avial. I finally wrote up instructions on how to use Find & Replace to find
all occurrences of the text New! and make it blue/bold.

I tell ya', sometimes I miss the WordStar/Multimate days of word processing,
it was clunky, but in a real simple way.

Thanks for all your help, and if I can ever be of assistance you can usually
find me in the Excel discussions forum.
