Table of contents styles changing - auto update

The TOC styles in my document keep changing themselves - eg the tabs get
removed
I go and check the sytles and see that they are set to Auto Update - I
change this but when I reopen the document, the styles are back as Auto
Update and the layout of the TOC is wrong.

Any help please.

Make sure that if you have attached a template under Templates and Add-
ins, you don't have the Automatically Update Document Styles ticked.
This should be unticked.
