Table of Contents won't generate

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

I am using Word 2008 for a document I'm saving to be compatible with earlier versions. Until yesterday, I was able to generate a TOC with no problem. Last night I added two headers and upgraded one. Since then, I have been unable to have a TOC show up. Every time I try to generate the TOC, it says "do you want to replace the current...?" (which isn't there), and I always say yes. I have looked for nested tables among the many in the doc and have found none. I have looked for hidden text, which I wouldn't have created knowingly, and none is apparent. I even tried opening it in Word 2004 to no avail. Any suggestions? I am hoping the solution is obvious to someone out there!
thanks.

Well, I determined that all I had to do was to say "no" when it asked whether I wanted to replace the current TOC. Thanks for listening.

That's a default action in any document that already HAS a TOC in it.

When you try to insert a second one, it will ask if you want to replace
(move!) the first.

If you say "No", you will get your new TOC where your insertion point is.
If you say "Yes", the previous TOC will move to where the insertion point
is.

Cheers
