Table of contents

some of my table of contents has the paragraph numbers in bold and some not.
I don't care which but I'd like them to be consistent.

I use heading style Heading 1, Heading 2, heading three for my section
heads, and they are all consistent, but when they come into the TOC, they are
not.

How did you format your headings in the body of the document? Note that any
direct formatting added to heading text will be reflected in the TOC.
Instead, make sure to modify the settings of the heading styles (via the
Modify Style dialog box).

Yes, that is what I did. Modified the heading styles via the modify button.
As far as I can see they all have the same numbering system and numbering
format.

Sometimes, direct font formatting could be hiding in the paragraph mark,
which may reflect in the heading number. If you select a heading whose TOC
entry is incorrectly formatted and press Ctrl+SpaceBar (to clear direct
formatting), and then update the TOC, does that make a difference?

Nope, no luck there

Not sure what I did, but it works now. Grrr.

Next problem - the tab stops after the numbers in the TOC don;t line up,
although they are all set the same in the headings.......

Adjust the tab stops for the TOC styles to get the look you want. You could
simply drag the tab stop directly for the TOC entries (that is, once per
level); this works since the TOC styles are set to "Automatically update."
Alternatively, set a hanging indent for each TOC style.
