Table of contents

I have seen people create word documents where the table of contents uses
dual numbering format. For example items in documents that are commonly
skipped such as acknowledgements use roman numerals and the main contents
use decimal numbers. This looks very professional and I would appreciate it
if someone can tell me how to do it.
