Table of Contents

Mary Geurkink

My boss created a document. He now wants me to create a
table of contents. He did not put any styles in the
document, but used the automatic numbering. When I try to
list a style for each outline level, it changes the
formatting, which he does not want. How do I create the
table of contents?

Thank you.

Mary,

Nice boss.

I suppose you are stuck with tagging each numbered item with a TC field and
creating the TOC based on table entry fields.

Tools>Options>View>Formatting Marks. Check hidden text

Use the Insert>Field>TC field to tag the entries

Use Insert>Reference>Index and Tables>TOC>Options>Build TOC from>table entry
fields.

Word Help has a piece on TC fields

Looks like you're out of luck and will have to follow Greg's advice.
Easy way to create the TC field: select text, press Shift-Alt-o.

If you set up the built-in Heading styles for him and showed him how
to use them . . . maybe he would?
