I am trying to create a table of contents based on heading levels, but not
including the text of the whole heading paragraph. For example, I would
like only the underlined text (which is underlined in the document) and the
heading number to appear in the actual TOC (with page numbers).
1. Organization.
a. Capitalized Terms and Definitions. Capitalized terms used in
this Agreement shall have the meaning specified in Exhibit A. Other terms
are defined in the text of this Agreement and throughout this Agreement
those terms shall have the meanings respectively ascribed to them.
b. Formation. Pursuant to the Washington Limited Liability
Company Act ("Act") _______________ (the "Company") was formed on
___________, when its Certificate of Formation was filed with the office of
the Secretary.
Sample of desired TOC:

In the past we have accomplished this by having the heading being a separate
paragraph with no following text. While giving us the ultimate result we
are seeking in a TOC, it unnecessarily adds to the length of the document,
converting what may already be a ponderously long document 60-70 pages, to
something that may approach 100 pages. (I am also somewhat able to
accomplish this by using the mark text function, but this is not exactly a
user friendly solution, nor does it include the heading numbers in the TOC
entries.)
However, I have recently seen a document that accomplishes what I want it to
do with respect to a TOC that seems to work with the TOC field in Word
(version Word2003). The entry that creates the TOC is:
{ TOC/t "Heading 1,1, Heading 2,2" \*MERGEFORMAT }
I cannot locate any additional field codes or hidden text in the document to
delineate the TOC entries. The text that gets included in the document is
formated as heading # + underline. When inserting new heading paragraphs
into this document, the new headings don't get included when I update the
TOC.
I suspect that the TOC was created in an outside document, stripping the
unwanted text from the document, importing the TOC and then saving the
document as a normal document to remove the data source. Does this seem
likely, and if so, can anyone point me to any articles that would help me
figure out how to do so?
I'm not sure if this is the correct users group to post to or not, but it
seems the closest fit as TOC are more related to numbering than tables. If
not, maybe someone can refer me to the correct group for this post.
