Table of contents

Using Word 2003 : 11.5604.5606
Using XP PRO : 5.1.2600 SP3 BUILD 2600

I am using Word for a 175 page document which had to be maintained.
There was a lot of outline numbering
(eg. 1 Paragrapgh
1.1 Sub
1.1.1 Subsub
1.1.1.1 Sub sub sub
... )
The document had also a table of contents.

When making changes to the document, time by time, the outline numbering was
getting completely wrong, so recently, I started numbering completely again.
I strictly followed the suggestions made by shauna kelly
(http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html)
and now outline numbering looks surprisingly good.

Next, I wanted to introduce again a Table of Contents.
Again, I strictly followed the suggenstions made by s kelly
(http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html)
But the only thing I get is 'Error! No table of contents entries found'.

Now that outline numbering is looking good, after following some strict
rules, I can't find and understand why Word is refusing to make table of
contents out of it.

Can anyone help me with this ?

Thanks

->When I look to the "Styles & formatting", and then "Modify style" for the
different outline levels :
1)
Style name : Chapter
Style based on : no style
Style following paragraph : normal 0

2)
Style name : Heading 1
Style based on : chapter
Style following paragraph : normal 0

3)
Style name : Heading 2
Style based on : Heading 1
Style following paragraph : normal 0

and so on to Heading 6, based on Heading 5

->When I look to "Modify style - Format - Bullets&numbering - Outline
numbered - Customize outline numbered list" :

Level 1 :
Number style : 1,2,3
Start at : 1
Link level to style : Chapter
Fieldlistname : Usermanual
Legal style numbering : no
Restart numbering after : not applicable
Apply changes to : whole list

Level 2 :
Number style : 1,2,3
Start at : 1
Link level to style : Heading 1
Fieldlistname : Usermanual
Legal style numbering : no
Restart numbering after : Level 1
Apply changes to : whole list

Level 3 :
Number style : 1,2,3
Start at : 1
Link level to style : Heading 2
Fieldlistname : Usermanual
Legal style numbering : no
Restart numbering after : Level 2
Apply changes to : whole list

and so on to level 9 :

Level 9 :
Number style : 1,2,3
Start at : 1
Link level to style : Heading 8
Fieldlistname : Usermanual
Legal style numbering : no
Restart numbering after : Level 8
Apply changes to : whole list

Is that sufficient as information ?
Thanks

:
eg. :

Chapter 1 : ... level 1
1. ... level 2
1.1 ... level 3
1.1.1 ... level 4
....
1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 ... level 9

Hmm, since you are using the built-in headings, it should be working...

What is the TOC field code(press Alt+F9 to find out)?

He'll need to add Chapter manually (in the TOC Options) or at least modify
the style to have outline level 1; then he's going to run into a problem
because Heading 1 will have to be remapped to 2 in the TOC Options because
the outline level can't be changed in the style; same for Heading 2. It
would work much better to use Heading 1 for the chapter title, Heading 2 for
the top-level headings in the chapter, and so on.

The code is :
{TOC\o "1-6"\h \z \u}

Side information : the document size is about 8.3MB.

Thanks

Which entries are missing from the TOC?

If the problem is what Suzanne described, you should be able to edit the
field code as follows:

{ TOC \t "Chapter,1,Heading 1,2,Heading 2,3,Heading 3,4,Heading 4,5,Heading
5,6" \h \z \u }

Press Alt+F9 to hide field codes again. Then update the TOC.
