When trying to establish a table of contents for my dissertation, the Help directed me towards Insert / Document Elements / Table of Contents. Unfortunately, Table of Contents is not bold, or not a highlightable option. Any suggestions?

Make sure the elements gallery is visible - go to view - elements gallery
make sure it is check marked. Also try to change the view to print layout.
It may be your document; try a new blank and see if the option becomes
available.

The most likely reason is that the document is a 97-2004 file & you are working in Compatibility Mode - take a look at the title bar. Use Save As to save a copy in Word Document (.docx) format and you should be able to use the feture in that copy.

In compatibility mode it is grayed out in the menu, but you still can insert
a table of
contents in compatibility mode when you go to the elements gallery and go to
document elements and click on table of contents there.

That's true, or one could also use Insert> Index & Tables as has been the
method in previous versions as far back as I can remember.

I had the impression that the question was posed more from the standpoint of
"why" the menu item was dimmed. Perhaps I'm being presumptuous, but I would
tend to think that anyone writing a *dissertation* would have already found
the Elements Gallery button and the TOC options within or the Insert> Table
command in the standard menu structure - their quest for Footnote, Endnotes,
Cross-References & Indices would have led them right to it:)

Oh, don't judge the Word-skills of dissertation writers by me! I almost
made that crack about the MSc thesis yesterday, but you have no idea how
many academics are totally bewildered by Word. :) I know for a fact
that last summer at least four of my professorial friends were
astonished to learn Word would even do a TOC.
