Table of Contents

I have no problem creating a table of contents within one document but now I need to create a TOC for multiple documents. I marked my document headings, saved my documents, opened a new document, then go to Insert, Field RD & type in name of file. Then when I create the TOC I get an error saying "file cannot be found on page 1". Can someone help?? Thanks, Sherry
