table of figures and table of tables

Okay I am a little unclear on things here.

so I have a document and want to generate a table of tables for all the
charts and a separate table of figures for all the diagrams.

So I have two separate styles.

1) The 'caption' style I use to define the style of the diagram and I
set the caption label type to "Figure"
2) The 'table title' style defines the table of tables for all the
charts and I set the caption label type to "Table"

but now what is happening is that I am unable to have two separate
caption label types. As soon as I change on fo the label types to
"Figure" all of the label types change to "Figure"

Isnt there a way to have two separate caption types - one for the
figures and another for the tables?

Hi Noah:

Yes, you can have two different labels.

If you use Insert>Caption to insert the captions, you can choose the label
you want (or define your own). Word will assign the Caption style to all
captions inserted this way.

So I am not understanding the exact steps you are using.

If you already have captions in the document, go through and format them all
with the style Caption (or any other style you want to use).

The Table of Figures Generator performs its selection based upon either the
style applied to the caption, or the "label" inside the SEQ field that
numbers each of the captions.

If you select one of the caption numbers and toggle field codes you will see
{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC }. In that field, it's the word "Figure" that will
cause this caption to be selected for listing in the Table of Figures.

If you use the method "Create a table of figures using Captions", Word uses
the SEQ fields.

If you use the "Create a table of Figures using custom style" method, Word
compiles all of the text with the style you assign. Choose this method if
you did not include a number in your captions.

You cannot do both (in a TOC you can, but not in a Table of Figures).

Cheers
