Table wraps to right of page

Hi All,

I am using Word XP & Windows XP. I have a 5 column table in a
document. When pressing the tab key to add a new row, if the table has
reached the end of the page, a new page is not added. The table
continues next to the top of the table to the right. As the table is
the same size as the page, the next row disappears off the right hand
side of the screen. I cannot scroll to it, but I can click in the
first cell that is visible. This problem has just started and any new
table I create now has this behavoir. It means I cannot have a table
more than one page long without putting in a page break a few inches
above the bottom margin and adding a second table.

I have found other messages in this forum and found that others have
had the same problem and the answer has been to change the wrapping
table properties to none. However this is already set to none. I have
checked the paragraph "keep with next" option and this is not checked
if I select individual cells or rows. However, if I select the whole
table, all the paragraph settings (widows/orphans etc) are all checked
but greyed out. I have checked every individual cell, and they are not
checked.

I have no idea what to do next. Any help will be much appreciated.

Go to Format | Columns and make sure the number of columns is set to 1.
We've seen a lot of cases where text just started disappearing at the end of
the page because the number of columns was set to 2, with the second column
very narrow; only because you're using a table (and have Compatibility
Options set to allow it to extend outside the margins) are you seeing the
text at all. If you find that this is the problem, it's probably in
Normal.dot, so you'll need to change the setting there as well (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm).

Hi Suzanne,

Yes the columns were set to 2. I've no idea how that happened. The funny
thing is that when I changed it back to 1, all subsequent tables were fine
as well. so my Normal.dot template must be OK.

Many thanks once again.

I'd love to know what is causing this (some sort of add-in would be my
guess), but so long as we are able to spot the symptoms, I guess that's
better than nothing!
