Microsoft is still investigating this ‹ it seems it might be a bug. We have
not heard from them on this issue yet.

If it is a bug, it seems it might be created by a corrupt table, or a
corrupt document.

To prove this, first convert your table to text (using the command on the
Table Menu) and then re-make it as a table. I would be interested to know
the result.

If that doesn't fix it, try de-corrupting the document using Maggie's
procedure:

The Maggie:
1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

More information:

This seems to be a bug in the "nesting" or "merging" of tables. Each row in
a table should contain the same number of columns. Each column should
contain the same number of rows. Word allows us to create tables where
neither of these statements is true. It even enables us to place tables
within tables.

But it seems that this bug only shows up when one or more of these abilities
has been used.

If you click in a table column and choose Table>Select>Column, the cells
that are highlighted are all members of that column. If they are not in a
straight column, expect trouble! Similarly, you can select a row: if the
cells highlighted are not in a straight line, again that table is living on
borrowed time until they fix this bug.

Hope this helps...
