Tables Shading By Default - How to Stop? (Word 2000)

Kevin Jarrett

Hi everyone,

A colleague at work is having a problem with Word 2000.

Every time she creates a table, it is shaded.

I tried replacing her normal.dot with one from another nearly
identical computer (clean install of Office 2000) but the problem
persists.

How can we get this to stop? She has to "unshade" every table she
creates.

Thanks, kj

Suggest that she select a different Table AutoFormat as the default (one
that doesn't include shading).

Thanks Suzanne, she is not applying any formatting whatsoever, it
happens whenever a new table is created. Where does she specify a
default table format?

Table | Table AutoFormat allows you to select the desired format for newly
created tables (select a format and press the Default... button). In Word
2002, you can choose Table Normal, which has no borders or shading or
special formatting at all. The "plainest" you can get in Word 2000 is Table
Grid.

I just emailed you ... but to share with all:

I don't get the Table Autoformat option unless there is a table in the
document. No problem, create a table, then click. Unfortunately I do
not see a default button anywhere on the dialog. What am I missing?

I do this all the time to set default fonts, so I know how the process
is supposed to work!

Kevin emailed me a screen shot of his Table AutoFormat dialog, and I'm
puzzled because it was my understanding that it was possible to select a
"favorite" or default Table AutoFormat in Word 2000. His screen shot,
however, clearly shows no Default... button, so I must have been mistaken.

Would it be worth it to write code to pop up an Input box for number of rows
and columns, then insert table with desired formatting, etc., and put it as
a button on the toolbar?

Thanks, Ed and Susan et. al., I would have to say only as a last
resort ... the user found a way to make this behavior the default, but
doesn't remember what she did ... there has to be a way to undo it ...
I've tried copying over a known, good normal.dot, are there any other
file that influences default document settings?

The selection of Table AutoFormat is presumably stored in the Registry, but
I can't find anything about which key would contain the setting.

WD2000: In Tables/Insert/Table there is an option to Set as Default.
Perhaps the option to autoformat was chosen and when backing out, the
default button was clicked.
Try selecting Tables/Insert/Table, click AutoFormat and choosing None at
the top of the list, then OK, then check the Set as Default for New Tables.
