tabloid printer required??

I want to purchase MS Publisher and work on a tabloid size document, but my
buddy says it won't work on your computer unless you have an 11x17 printer
available on that computer. Who can clear this up for me? Is this really
true? I am having a professional printer do the printing once I have the
document ready.

You need a printer *driver* for a printer that can handle that size
document. You don't need to actually own a printer that does.

You can use an HP driver for any printer that supports tabloid printing.
Alternatively you could use a PDF driver such as that available from
www.primopdf.com
