Tabs do not work for moderate document selection.

I have a large (20 page) document (landscape) that I need to format (list of account codes). The ruler tab continues to "disappear" and not allow updates (I have the entire document selected). If I go to the format Tabs . . . I can set the tabs, however, the tabs do not show when I return to continue to modify (page -- all tabs -- blank).

I have done this MANY times (I am an old guy) with previous word(s) (20 years maybe). Word has always done this type of thing with blazing speed, but NOT with 2008 Word for Mac.

A single small selection does work as desired. Since this is my first actual use of 2008 Word with a production task, we are batting 0-1. I had to "retreat" to textedit.

See if it works in a different document. If so, try the corrupt doc fixes:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html

If not, then try these diagnostic tricks to help locate the cause of the
problem:

1) hold down shift while launching Word. If the problem disappears, it
was probably due to a corrupt Normal template or corrupt preferences.

2) Log out of your user account, then hold down shift while logging back
in. If the problem disappears, it is probably due to some conflict with
the login items/utilities in your user account.

3) create a new user account in OS X and test in that one. If the
problem disappears, then the installation is fine but some other
user-specific file has corrupted.

Couple of points:

1) I'm probably older than you :)

2) The tab positions on the ruler will be disabled if you select paragraphs
with different styles, or objects that cannot have tabs.

I suggest that you click in ONE paragraph, move the tabs to your taste, then
use the "Update Style" function in the Formatting Palette Styles segment to
change the style. That will update the tabs in every paragraph of that
kind.

If you have previously set the tabs by direct formatting, you may need to
use a Command + q to remove the old tabs from the paragraphs so the style
setting can shine through :)

Hope this helps
