tabulating similar data

hi,

i'm looking for a way to calculate a number of similar entries in a
single column. that is, i have one column with about 5000 entries,
some of which are the same value.

like : a, a, a, b, c, d, e, e, e, e, f, g, g, h

is there a simple way to calculate how many of a there is, how many of
b, c, d, et cetera?
