Tag Line and Org Name Text Boxes?

T

tcarp

I'm just getting started using Pub for web. Somehow I got two text boxes
that replicate on all my pages (I actually can see a good use). When I move
the mouse over the edges one shows that it's a "Tag Line Text Box" and the
other shows it's an "Organization Name Text Box". I can't find anything in
online help or the $10 reference I bought. What are these? How did I create
them? What do they do? When is it best to use them?

Thanks

There is "ALT" text under the Picture formatting dialog.
What version of Pub are you using?
What web site template are you using?

Thanks for returning the post, David

I run Pub 2003 and I think I started with a blank web template (although I'm
not totally sure - I was doing some experimenting at the time.)

So does your note imply that these text boxes are somehow associated with a
picture? The only picture was a logo that I tore apart to change the icon
and the company name.

BTW, I checked and there is no Alt text entered for either of the text boxes
(or for any object in the document for that matter).

Further info: These boxes are somehow linked on each page in the document.
A change in one changes all on all pages. Makes me think that these are
special kinds of text boxes. Just don't understand them or how I got them
there.

Did you create a Master Page? You don't want to use a Master Page in a web
publication.

Tom,

In Pub 2000 when you use the Wizard to create a site from a template, at one
point it will insert your Personal Information into the template. Two of the
fields in this Personal Information are Organization name and Tag line or
motto. Then if you used the option to duplicate all objects on a page, when
you added a page, these fields show up on each page you add, and any changes
to the Tag line, or Organization field is propagated through out each page.
You can return to the Web Site Wizard to change the Personal Information. In
fact if you select the Organization and Logo object on your page, you might
see a little wizard wand or just go to Edit > Personal Information.

Hi David,

I think you hit it. It makes sense that the Tag Line and the Organization
Name text boxes are associated with Personal Information. An interesting
question is how I got them in the state they are in my document. I do see
how copying them from page to page makes them similar in showing changes to
one. What I don't understand is how I created them in the first place.

When I look in Edit>Personal Information I do NOT see the content of the
text boxes in the fields in the window displayed. This includes all of the
information sets that are available. It looks like somehow I may have broken
up a logo and, in the process, kept the association of the text boxes to the
personal information (tag and org), but can't see the information in any
personal information set. Must be one of those undocumented features ;)

Now I'm kinda stuck. On the one side I like having text boxes on each page
that act like a header, meaning that they replicate content on any page that
has them. Does Publisher 2003 have any feature like this or have I stumbled
onto a way to make it happen? My concern is that the use of text boxes
designed for other purposes may come back to bite me some time in the future.

One other thing I observed was that if I went to Edit>Personal Information
and then exited by selecting "Update" all the Log and Org text boxes were
updated with the information in the window.

So, it appears that you can edit the text in these boxes and move them all
over a document and they will replicate changes made directly to any of the
similar text boxes. And, if you Update personal information, all the text in
all the boxes is updated simultaneously.

Still not sure how they got there in the first place.

Tom,

It sounds like you are figuring it out, but this is one of those times you
should go to Publisher help, and look at all the articles listed under
'Personal Information'. They will show you how you can use this feature
better than I can describe it. One reason...I don't use that feature...I
don't like automatic anything, but that's me. Also look under the term
'Synchronization'...which is what is going on with the Personal Information.
I'm betting by the time you finish that 'home work' you will be ready to
pass the test. ;-)

As to how it got there...you started with a template, and they have those
page elements on them by default. They will show up even if you never fill
in all the fields under your 'Personal Information'. I think you will find
through your homework ways of inserting them into your document as
desired...
