Takes too long to open applications

I just purchased a new 1.8 ghz puter and have Office XP.
Most of the time it only takes seconds to open an
application in Word or Excel. But every 8-10 trys it will
take about 30 seconds for the an application to open. It
is not consistent as it happens on different applications.

Please advise.
