Taking forever to open docs because "Requesting Virus Scan..."

Deb

Hi,
I just noticed it yesterday. I went to open an
attachment and Word took almost 2 minutes to load. It
happens even when I open a file on my hard drive. It
happens with Excel documents also.

I always click OK to download updates from Microsoft when
I turn on my computer each day. Did I get it there?

How do I turn it off? I want my files to be safe but I
can't afford that much downtime.

Thanks

I to experience the same problem on all my 5 Office
desktops starting today. It takes forever to open any
Excel or Word doc. I get the "requesting virus scan" when
ever I try to open just like it has aleays done only today
it takes forever. All machines have the latest symantec
definitions.

Thanks

Hi --
Me too. I discovered that MS Apps are going out to the
web each time you open them. If you disable your web
connection, it will not let you open the app (Word or
Excel) with 'full capability' -- there was a message to
put in your Office CD-ROM if you wanted to have full
functionality. I've registered all stuff -- It shouldn't
check on it each time I open the app.

Those "latest symantec definitions" are probably the problem.

from Symantec suggests turning off certificates in IE.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q320365
describes how to disable the Office plug-in (which you should do anyway,
as far as I'm concerned). It's a PPT kb article, but the instructions
for disabling the plug-in are good.
