Taking forever to open or close my spreadsheet

I'ts taking forever, sometimes as long as 30 min to open
or close my spreadsheet. When i go to windows task
manager to end task, there are duplicate sheets there.
The cpu usage is at 100 percent at the time i open the
task manager. Can anyone help? I have excel 2000 SR-1.
