Can I load of copy one note or even office 2007 onto a portable drive, such a
an 8gig flash drive? I wan to use OneNote as I move from pc to pc to laptop
and not all are conected to a network or have internet access. Or can I copy
to a flash drive so I can use it as I move around?

Thanks

The OneNote program needs to be properly installed, and various DLLs
registered, etc. You can't run it from a USB key and move the program from
computer to computer. That is likely not allowed via the license.

The Notebook files themselves can be stored on a USB Key and moved from
computer to computer, assuming that each computer has a licensed copy of
OneNote installed.

You can not run ON from a mobile device. As the other Office
applications ON is based on using the Registry and therefore ON can only
be run if installed on the device.

You can store the *notebooks* on a USB-stick/Flash Drive but not the
program itself.

In case you want to use a removable device as the storage place, in
order to allow synching you have to *always* open the notebooks from the
USB-stick/Flash Drive (nit from a local HDD).

I don't think this is true anymore. The newest wave of "portable
application" platforms for flash memory drives claim they have overcome the
registry issues. I don't think you can run OneNote using the U3 platform,
but it appears that Ceedo software can. I haven't tried it myself, so it
might be worth some research (it isn't free so I assume you can contact their
user support). I also don't know anything (one way or the other) about how
this installation fits in with the MS software licencing so I would also read
that carefully.

The other issue is that I don't know if the flash drive would be fast enough
to handle OneNote's caching activity efficiently.

Keep in mind, that in addition to probably not being legal from a licensing
point of view, it will likely not be supported by MS.

My introduction to OneNote was a portable version of 03 that ran on a flash
drive.
I have no idea of the source or the legality of it but it did most of what
it was supposed to.
Whether it did any caching or registry tinkering I have no idea as it was
definitely trashware and I used it only briefly but did show me the
possiblilties of the full program and especially as offered in the 07
version.

So it did run after a fashion from a flash drive.

I suspect that the licensing is simply "behind the times" here and will catch
up soon enough if the technology works. The possibility of loading software
the magnitude of Office programs was simply way off the radar -- the software
paradigm has always been "software is installed on one machine", but the
analogy of using it like a book would still seem valid so I would hope this
would just be a temporary technicality.

Maybe Microsoft can create its version of the flash software and call it
"Windows 1/7 Beta". :)
