tally marks

how do i insert tally marks

For the single vertical bars, use the | character.

For the group of five, you need to use the drawing toolbar. Make a
text box and type four vertical bars into it -- I think it looks
better if there's a space between each pair. Then use the line tool to
draw the diagonal across them. For fine positioning, it helps to hold
the Alt key while you drag.

Hold the Shift key while you select the diagonal and the textbox. When
they're both selected, right-click and select Grouping > Group to make
the whole thing into one piece. Copy it and paste it as much as you
want.

I found I couldn't make one of these into an AutoText or AutoCorrect
entry -- maybe I'm just missing the magic word. :)

Hi

Could you tell me what 'tally' marks are.

I know the expression 'tally ho' but that doesn't help me

Thanks

When you're keeping a running count of something (like how many times a
speaker says "you know" <g>), the usual way is to count by fives. To do this
you count the first four using uprights (| | | |); the fifth is a diagonal
crossing the uprights, usually from upper left to lower right, like an N.
