Task cannot be modified in any way???

Hi,
I've got a task that has no predecessors, etc. It is a sub task under a
summary task, and is for 5 hrs on one day with one resource. The day has
passed (Jan. 5), no actual work was done on the task, and it is not going to
be done in the future. I have tried to delete the task, change duration to
zero hours, change actual work to zero hours with zero work remaining, remove
resources, and just about every other modification I can think of to get rid
of it. I wouldn't mind it just sitting there, but with every move I make in
the project I get an alert that the resource is overallocated on that
specific date for that task and it cannot be resolved. Whatever changes I
make to that task cause a number of tasks scheduled for Feb and March to move
out to March 2011. As far as I can see there is nothing linking the
troubling task to the future tasks, and I can only assume this is some kind
of bug.....but what do I do about it?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Is automatic levelling on?

I have MS Office 2003, and we have the latest SP 3 installed.
I am fairly new to Project, and how would I know if "automatic leveling" is
on?

Thanks Dave,
That seemed to work. What a simple solution to a pain-in-the-neck problem.
Am most grateful!
