TASK Dimension missing in OLAP cube. Why?

Mr_Tom

I hope that someone from Microsoft is reading this!!!

We upgraded the project server to Project Server 2003 in hopes that
the OLAP cube would finally support per-task reporting.

But still... there it's not possible "out-of-the-box"
My client wants to report and analyse based on TASKS and not by
Project only.

I have been working through the SDK and the OLAP Extensions from
Microsoft.
The closest I came was in the example with the "TaskEarnedValue" ...
I got it working and the breakout DLL compiled etc... but this is
still
not giving me the drill-down of the tasks per project.

I think there must be more of us asking for this, since many project
managers resource, plan and bill BY TASK and not by project.
We love the OLAP cube features... but why is there no TASK DIMENSION
linked for the Portfolio Analyser ???

I will monitor this thread in the hopes that someone "out-there" has
done this customization and has some pointers for me!

Thanks!!!!

Thomas,

We had the same problem and resorted to developing
queries outside of project that hit the tables for task
information.

We have a .net application that does this, but we are
currently having problems pulling out outline codes.

I agree that MS has not done a good job of making task
data accessible.

Hi Bill,

I'm still hoping that there is a "hidden" extension someone from
Microsoft has already done.
So far it seems that nobody else is seeing reporting on specific tasks
as a required feature.
I will have to start some "tinkering" with the OLAP cubes if nobody
else is responding to this message. I could not find anything in this
regard on the web.
We really want to keep the reporting through the OLAP cube and the
Portfolio Analyser and will try this before custom queries via ADO and
NET

Thanks for your reply!
Take care,

Thomas

Hi Bill and Thomas -

I know we have the same need here. I as well can't
believe this has not been addressed by somebody. If you
should here of a solution, I would certainly appreciate
the information as well.

Best Regards,
Roxanne

Found a good OLAP . great price too ... Check it out....

IQub Browser Professional Edition is a feature-rich application
providing online multidimensional analysis. By connecting directly to
Microsoft's SQL Server MS-OLAP/Analysis Server cubes, or to local
cubes, you can explore large volumes of summarized data quickly and
efficiently. With Professional Edition you can create local cube
copies from MS-OLAP/Analysis Server cubes, perfect for company wide
distribution or taking on the road.

SHAMELESS PLUG FOLLOWS:

OK - I've created an OLAP extender adding task data to the cube.

Unfortunately I can't give the solution away as we're making our living
extending various aspects of the MSProject offerings, but please send me an
email and I'll pass it on to people at the office.

BTW - I've added an ISO week dimension to the cube as well.. :)

If you're interested, remove the nospam bit from my email address and let me
know.
