Task Information in Dispaly Balloons

Greetings All!

I am using Project 2007 and have a question regarding the data
displayed in the ballon when one puts the cursor over a task in Gantt
Chart View. Most of the data is self explanatory - task name, start,
duration, finish, etc. However, in the schedule I am working, the top
row of information in some balloons is gibberish (ie accented
characters, squares, etc) as if the data in the field is corrupt. In
other balloons, it is effectively a 'blank' line which I am guessing
means the field is blank. But I have no idea what the identity of the
field is causing this issue. Any thoughts?

For what it is worth, the Project file started as a v2000 file and was
upconverted when I started using Project 2007.

Thanks!

Hello Don,

I believe what you are seeing is a problem that occurred with the
Gantt bar names if the Gantt chart wizard. If you open the Format >
Bar Styles dialog box, you'll see the same odd characters in the
names of some of the bars. The good news is if you type a name in
the "Name" area, it will recover itself and show the entered name in
both the screen tip (balloon) as well as in the legend when you
print the view.

I don't have 2007 running currently so I can't check if the
Infrastructure Update solved the problem -- but you may wish to
confirm that you are running Service Pack 1 as well as the
infrastructure update.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,

As you suggested, I checked the bar styles dialog and sure enough a
couple of the bar styles had the gibberish for the bar style name. I
changed them to something more meaningful and viola, the ballon data
looked good!

According to 'about' the MS Project 2007 on my machine has SP1
installed. However, I am not sure if the "Infrastructure Update" you
descibed is installed. Is there anyway to tell from help->about?
Build numbers maybe?

Thanks for the help!

Hi Don,

You're welcome Don. Glad to have helped and thanks for the
feedback.

I'm not sure the build numbers tell the whole story about whether
the IU is installed but see the following KB article -- it has
information about build and date numbers.

Julie,

After I sent my last reply to you I did some searching and came across
a couple of KB articles. They threw me a bit since they were for a MS
Project server. The link you sent addresses workstation version of
project. Based on the information in the article, it looks like the
version on my machine is up to date with the exception of
p12migrationtool.exe not being installed.

Thanks again!

Hi Don,

Glad to know you're up to date. It may be that the problem was
created prior to the install of the SP and/or IU. I cannot
reproduce in a new file any longer but I don't believe either would
have fixed an existing problem.
