task lasting full length of project

using Project 2007 and Project Server 2007

I'm trying to adjust the Project Management task that runs for the full
duration of a project so that it starts on the Project Start Date and
finishes when the last milestone is completed. When I adjust other tasks
duration the life of the project I would like the PM task to adjust
automatically.

Any suggestions?

tks

Hi Jane,

If I understand your problem:

Make a Summary Task that includes the whole project and allocat
resource to that summary task. They will last as long as the Projec
does.

Cheers, Hugh.

I could but it is a task for the Project Management duties which need to be
assigned to me - eg a couple fo hours each week. There are many other
resources on the project too so I would not want my task as a summary task
over all other tasks.

Yes! That is exactly what the resources assigned to the Summary task ar
for - work that goes on at a certain rate for the duration of th
project. It is in the Project Help - that is where I learned how to d
it. A couple of hours a week - that makes it 2/40 = 5% resourc
allocation.

Why would you not want a summary task over the whole project? It jus
indents everything one step. It works (unlike some other things!).

Hugh.

It is "best practice" comments that I have seen like Trevor's that make me
not want to allocate a resource to the Summary task - or
predecessors/successors . I am trying to tackling this whole PS setup the
right way to ensure that leveling works across all my projects using teh same
Resource Pool.

I shall try the Hammock task tomorrow (time to go home here in Australia:)

Hi Jane,

FWIW, I found that I prefer to manage the PM task manually rather than with
a hammock task. Just simpler to me, even if it requires some manual
tweaking to ensure my PM task doesn't become the critical path task by
finishing last.

What I do is set up my PM task as fixed units and adjust the duration so
that it is a few days shorter than the project. I prefer to place this task
just above my project complete milestone.

Your mileage may vary,

Thanks for the suggestion Trevor, I'll give that a try next time I nee
one.
I hope it works for you, Jane.

Now that I have my hammock task :) ...

This could be a Project Server questions but follows on from introducing my
Hammock task for the overall Proejct Management task on my project.

In the PWA window within Outlook my Remaining Work is displayed as "83356
m". I have myself allocated as a resource to the PM task with availability
at 7%. Other tasks for other resources are displayed as days.

Jane,
You're right, this is a Project Server item and should be posted to our
sister newsgroup at, microsoft.public.project.server. But, just reading
what you wrote, I don't see an actual question. So before you post to
the server newsgroup, come up with a question.
