Task List View Date Column is useless?

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

Views of the task list have an available column "Date" but it is never populated. The View>Columns menu item only shows "Date" not "Start Date" or "Due Date" What the heck is this?

While in Task view select View --> Columns --> Start Date/Due Date.
