Task Pane, And Auto Recover Function Questions, Please

Hello:

My son and I both use MS Word 2002.
He has a few questions that I can't quite answer, and since he lives a fair
distance away, I
thought I'd ask here.

He has tried to recover a document he was working on when his PC crashed
using
Word's Auto Recover ability.

I told him to go to VIEW\ and make sure that the box for Task Pane was
checked.
Then, too look in the right hand column for some folder that probably says
Recovered Files, or something similar.

Two questions:

a. The only thing that appears on the right side of the page for him is a
drop down menu called New Documents with just:
New Documents, Clipboard, Search, and some Formatting options appearing in
the drop-down list..Nothing in the column;
just the New Document drop drop down option

On my PC's WORD, I have a slew of Folders and items that appear without
going to the New Documents drop down options
I have a bunch of Folders such as Open A Document, New, New From Existing
Documents, etc. that show immediately.

Why might he not have these ? ( rememember, the Taskpane box IS checked on
his PC)

b. The Auto Recover function was checked on his.
But he cannot find the recovered file anywhere.

Shouldn't it be on a Folder on the right hand side column (where there
are presently no folders showing) ?

Much thanks,
Appreciate the help,
Bob
