Task Pane

Using Word 2003. While trying to solve a problem I put back default settings
and now I can't get rid of the Getting Started task pane on the right side
of a document. I uncheck the task pane command in View and it disappears but
comes back the next time I try to use Word.
In online help I see another way to solve the problem in the registry but I
am leary about that. I am told to back up the registry but in the past
whenever i try to do a backup by exporting the registry, when I try to get
it back I was told I couldn't get a good backup. Any other suggestions?

Solved my Task Pane problem by installing Task Pane Controller in Tools.
This lets me set to keep task pane closed on startup or close after opening
a document. Learned about it from Microsoft newsgroup.

Did you check the state of: Tools/Options/View/Show: Startup Task pane?

Yes, Michael, I did as I mentioned in my previous post. I am happy to state
that the Task Controller did the trick and my problem is solved. Thanks for
the input.

I understood your previous message to mean that you turned the Task Pane
off via View/Task Pane, keyboard equivalent Ctrl+F1. That action will
indeed turn the Task Pane off only for the current Word session. Based
on that reading of your original message, I suggested the Tools/Options
method.

If that didn't work either, you might consider this article:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=838676>. Gist: delete the registry key
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\General\DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane
Setting it to zero will presumably have the same effect.

Michael:
As I said previously. I found a Task Pane Controller that solved my problem
thus making it unnecessary to go into the registry for a fix. Thanks anyway
for your suggestion.
