Task scheduling concurrent and in past on over allocated resources

I am new to Project and I trying to add new tasks and view the Gantt
chart to see when these tasks are to be scheduled. I am working with
several resources. When I insert a new task it is always scheduled to
run concurrently with other tasks starting on the Project start date no
matter how over allocated a resource is. The added tasks are all
subtasks of a summary task. The project start date was several months
ago. I have set the "New Tasks" option under the 'Collaboration
Options - schedule' menu set to 'start on current date'. I have
also experimented with the task levelling fields and start fields but
it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have been able to level
resources after all the tasks are scheduled but it is still using the
project start date instead of the current date. How can I get Project
to schedule new tasks in the future when resources are free? Any help
would be appreciated.

You need to set dependencies between existing tasks and the new tasks in the
summary section. If you still have overallocated resources in the project,
you can level the overallocations using Tools - Level Resources. Hope this
helps.

Yes - if I link it to an older task and then use the Level Resources
function - that helps. Thanks
