Taskbar: What is "you have unopened mail"?

On the taskbar, next to the Outlook icon, there is an icon that looks like an
envelope. It reads "You have new unopened mail." What is it? When it
appears, I check my inbox and unread mail but there is never anything there.

When Outlook detects that a message has been received, if you have the
option enabled, it will display this icon in the notification area of the
system tray.

why it keeps telling me there is an unread message when I can't find
one anyplace.

Do you have any rules? Have you looked in the Junk E-mail folder?
